Evan stopped talking and turned around when he noticed the lack of a second pair of footsteps against the pavement. She stood there completely motionless gazing far away at what he couldn’t tell. Something only she could see or maybe nothing at all. She was always a little strange. Only her back and her long locks gently flowing from the midday breeze rising from the river were visible to him. There was something about her at that moment as if she was in complete balance with the world around. Her being seemed to be in perfect synch with the invisible tune of their surroundings. The busy noise of the street seemed to dim as he watched her. The trucks passing by with they clunks and clinks and loud motors simply buzzed like bees. The loud cacophony of shoppers and students on the sidewalk also faded to melodious murmurs. A sort of mutual respect, he thought, as he felt rather soothed. Hesitantly, he called out to her, “Umm, Sally.” She turned around and her smile seemed to hit him like a flash of pure light, brightening the dim world. His cheeks redden. At that instant, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She felt like a free and warm summer breeze. Calming and soul soothing but mostly and incredibly free, which was something he long for so deeply that tears began to trickle down his face as he couldn’t help but smile back. As they began to walk once more, she simply whispered to the wind: “what do you see when you close your eyes?”
